Congratulations to our year 7 and 8 boys teams and our Intermediate Girls team for winning their respective 2018 SSV State Finals in AFL. The State Championships we played over 3 days from the 28/8 to the 30/8 at Highgate Reserve, Craigieburn. Home of the Calder Cannons
The Year 7 boys were the first of the 3 teams to be named State Champions when they won the final against Rowville Secondary College 11.13.79 to 7.7.49 on Tuesday. In a tough contest, Rowville kicked the first 3 goals of the game, before the Marby boys steadied to lead at quarter time. From there they were never really headed. A solid performance to win the game by 30 points. Campbell Wordell was handed the best on ground medal.
The Year 8 boys then went out on Wednesday to become State Champions, when they defeated Berwick 9.13.67 to 9.10.64. It was close game right throughout the day however there were a couple of momentum swings which saw Berwick come from 10 points down to take the lead at the 16 minute mark of the last quarter. MSA won the next centre clearance and in a really congested contest. Best on Ground medallist Cam Kizan took a strong grab and converted from 30 m out to put the Jets up by three points with 90 second to go. The Jets did what they had to do to hold on to a famous victory.
On Thursday the Intermediate Girls claimed the 3rd of 3 State Championships when they defeated Wonthaggi 13.17.95 to 0.1.1. The Maribyrnong Girls lead from the start and really turned on a fantastic football performance to win the Academy’s first Intermediate girls AFL State Championship. Best on Ground for the Jets was Georgie Prespakis
The Academy would also like to thank our coaches Torin Baker, Martin Walsh, Marty Cusack, Ryan Emmett and Andrew Komp for the work that they put into helping our students get on the park and into a winning situation.
