The Maribyrnong Sports Academy Basketball program has been growing year after year providing young athletes who have an ambition of getting to higher levels of the game within the sport. We have been able gather all levels of talent and help to incorporate a "hard work" ethic that translates into growth and opportunity for those athletes. Through the years we have been able to provide several pathways for our athletes to pursue higher levels of play. These pathways include State Team inclusion and US College Scholarships, which many of our athletes are currently participating in. This is certainly a benefit to the program as the US College pathway leads to international recognition.
The basketball program is not just a pathway to improve our basketball skill level. Through our coaching staff we are also able to help players adjust in:
Diversity of team and cultural aspects within a team sport
Recognise different levels of ability and be able to communicate to achieve a common goal within a group environment.
Relate sport to life experience and to understand that achievement through sporting habits can be transferred to achievement in life by applying the same communication, work ethic, and acceptance skills of others.
Our basketball program is based on developing individual skill level of each athlete and incorporating that skill into game situation and recognition. We work extensively on getting each athlete comfortable in their training, environment which includes: Ball Handling, Shooting, Defense, Footwork, Communication, Passing, Rebounding, and Game structure from 1 on 1 to 5 on 5. We make sure to teach the game from the smallest aspect to the largest.
We train right here at Maribyrnong Sports Academy. Our facility houses just about everything we need to help develop our athletes to their fullest potential. We did however use the Victoria University facility when our stadium was still under construction which was a huge help to the program.
